Staying at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness puts you within touching distance of one of the strangest mysteries in Scotland. It has captured the imagination of locals and visitors to the Highlands for centuries. The Loch Ness Monster, an elusive creature said to swim in the loch, has been rarely photographed but its reputation has travelled all over the world. But what is the monster? Is it real? And where is the best place to spot it? Read on to find out!

First sightings

The Loch Ness monster – or Nessie as she is affectionately known – is not a new addition to Scotland’s culture. Indeed, the first sighting was over a thousand years ago when St Columba, an Irish missionary who helped spread Christianity to Scotland, reported a “water beast” in nearby River Ness. Of course we don’t know very much about Nessie. Maybe she is a thousand years old – that all adds to the mystery. She joins a pantheon of legendary Scottish monsters including the horse-shaped Kelpies who are said to have lured unexpected travellers to their watery graves. Kelpies are not a far cry from the shape people associate with Nessie – a long neck reaching up out of the surface. Perhaps they are distant cousins!

Modern mythology

Ask any of the locals around Fort Augustus, or any fellow guests you might bump into in our beautiful grounds, and they are sure to have their own stories of that time they saw something weird on the loch. Perhaps a water movement in the corner of the eye, or a splash behind some trees.

Nobody knows what Nessie is. The last remaining creature of her kind? A remnant of the age of the dinosaurs? An alien? A ruse? Everyone has their own thoughts, and that’s part of the fun of talking about our favourite monster. It wasn’t until the early 1930s that the stories of Nessie really began to propagate throughout Scotland and beyond.

The famous – or infamous – “surgeon’s photo” is really what kicked off and kept people talking about a monster in the water. This photo by Dr Robert Kenneth Wilson was widely published in a national newspaper, and the excitement grew from there. It has inspired millions of people to visit Loch Ness over the last century. And all of them hoping to catch an elusive glimpse, and maybe even a snapshot or two, of the Loch Ness Monster. And many more photos have been captured since then, supposedly of the loch’s giant inhabitant. People have even given up their 9-5 lives in an attempt to capture an undeniable image of her. This includes famous Nessie hunter Steve Feltham who resides by the shores at Dores. He was subject of a BBC documentary, such is his passion for Nessie. You can always visit and if he is there, say hi!

Scientific analysis

If it’s scientific evidence you have come here for, well…keep scrolling. Unfortunately there’s very little in the way of evidence, and nothing conclusive in the slightest. But then, Nessie wouldn’t be ‘elusive’ is she showed up to the opening of the local gala every year, would she?

For years, people have sailed ships armed with sonar to detect any large masses in the water. Every few years ‘something’ is found but, unfortunately, nothing is ever proven. Of course, lack of evidence is not evidence of absence. So you never know what you might come across on your visit.

Etape Loch Ness

27th April 2025

The Etape Loch Ness is a closed-road cycling event held annually in the Scottish Highlands. The 66-mile route circles Loch Ness, starting and finishing in Inverness at the northern tip of the loch, and passing through Fort Augustus at the opposite end. Cyclists are drawn to its challenging climbs and the chance to ride traffic-free through some of Scotland’s most stunning landscapes.

Ultra X Scotland

3rd to 4th May 2025

The Ultra X Scotland ultra marathon follows the Great Glen Way with Loch Ness as its backdrop. There are four event distances: 68 miles over 2 days (Saturday & Sunday), 37 miles (Saturday), 31 miles (Sunday) and 16 miles (Sunday), some of which start or finish in Fort Augustus. This is Scotland’s biggest ultra-marathon, featuring some routes that far exceed the standard marathon distance. It’s a formidable challenge, even for the most experienced runners!

Great Glen Ultra Marathon 42 & 72

5th July 2025

This on-foot race to Inverness follows the path of the Great Glen Way. The short course is 42 miles (68 km) long, starting in Fort Augustus, while the full course is 72 miles (116 km) from Fort William. It is a solo runner event, and runners can look forward to experiencing exceptionally beautiful surroundings. The shorter route begins at Fort Augustus Village Hall, making us a perfect base for preparing for the race, as well as somewhere beautiful to stay after you have completed it.

Monster the Loch

6th September 2025

Monster the Loch is a mass participation boat race held on Loch Ness. The 21-mile route runs between Fort Augustus and Dores. Participants can use any human-powered boats including kayaks, rowing boats and pedalos. The race direction depends on wind conditions, often starting in Fort Augustus. It is a great spectacle to view, due to the sheer number of boats on the loch.

The route stretches between Fort William and Inverness and may be in either direction depending on the weather conditions. The event welcomes kayaks, canoes and paddleboards and attracts competitors from across the UK and beyond.

The Scottish Highlands is one of the most breathtaking places to visit in the world, with its rugged landscapes, ancient history and warm hospitality. If this is your first time in Scotland, exploring the Highlands is a must! From dramatic mountains to historic castles, here are a few of our favourite locations that showcase the best of Scotland…

Loch Ness

We’ll start with our very own Loch Ness. No trip to the Highlands is complete without visiting us here in Fort Augustus. Based at one of our beautiful apartments or cottages within a famous and historic abbey, this iconic loch is right on the doorstep. Of course, Loch Ness is known worldwide for its mythical monster, Nessie. Take a boat tour with Cruise Loch Ness to enjoy the stunning scenery, looking out for the monster along the way. Walk, cycle or sail along the engineering marvel that is the Caledonian Canal. Explore the ruins Urquhart Castle. Enjoy panoramic views from Suidhe Viewpoint. There’s something for everyone to enjoy around the mysterious waters of Loch Ness.

Visit Loch Ness, the most famous loch in Scotland

Glen Coe

Glen Coe is an iconic Scottish location. It’s a dramatic valley with towering mountains and cascading waterfalls. This stunning area is a haven for walkers and outdoors enthusiasts. It is also one of the most photographed places in Scotland, with picture-perfect scenery in every direction. From the spectacular Buachaille Etive Mòr to The Three Sisters. You can also drive the Skyfall Road, a James Bond filming location on the way to Glen Etive.

Buachaille Etive Mòr in Glen Coe

Isle of Skye

For dramatic coastal scenery, head to the Isle of Skye, one of Scotland’s most beautiful islands. The island is connected to the mainland via a bridge, making it easily accessible. See the Old Man of Storr, a jagged rock formation with breathtaking views, or take a walk through the Fairy Pools, a series of crystal-clear waterfalls and pools. The Quiraing is a wonderful hike to do, featuring unusual and otherworldly rock formations.

Eilean Donan

Eilean Donan is a small island in the western Highlands, located where three lochs meet. Its castle, Eilean Donan Castle, is one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks. This picturesque fortress looks straight out of a movie, and has been featured in several. You can view it from the mainland, or cross the bridge for a closer look. The castle is open for tours, where you can learn all about its fascinating history.

Eilean Donan Castle

The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms is a vast national park with ancient forests, sparkling rivers and some of Scotland’s tallest mountains. In winter, you can ski at the Cairngorm Mountain resort, and in summer you can take part in water activities at Loch Morlich Watersports. There is plenty of wildlife to spot in the park, including deer, wildcats, red squirrels, ospreys, pine martens and golden eagles.

Enjoy amazing walks in the Cairngorms National Park

Ben Nevis & Fort William

If you’re up for a challenge, you could hike Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak. Fort William, the gateway to Ben Nevis, is a charming town with plenty of pubs, restaurants and outdoor activities. For a more relaxing adventure, take a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, famously known as the Hogwarts Express from Harry Potter, which runs from Fort William to Mallaig. Although, this must be booked well in advance as it is extremely popular.

Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in the UK

The North Coast 500

For those who love road trips, the North Coast 500 is one of the world’s most scenic drives! Starting from Inverness, the route takes you along the north coast of Scotland for over 500 miles, passing remote beaches, rugged cliffs and charming fishing villages. John O’ Groats in Caithness is the northernmost village on the mainland, which is a great spot to take in stunning sea views and perhaps even spot some puffins or dolphins. Or, you could venture further to Dunnet Head, the most northern tip of Scotland. We love the historic Caithness hotel and restaurant, The Ulbster Arms Hotel.

See the famous signpost at John O’ Groats

Travelling from Australia to Scotland is an epic adventure! Here in Scotland, you can enjoy stunning landscapes, rich history and a warm Scottish welcome. Whether you’re planning a short holiday or a longer stay, it’s good to know what to expect when you get here. So, here are a few things you need to know before making the journey…

Can I fly direct to Scotland?

Most flights from Australia will connect through a hub airport like Dubai, Doha or Singapore. The total flight time is around 24 hours. You can check for available flights using Skyscanner.

What’s the weather like in Scotland?

Scotland’s weather often gets a bad rep, but the reality is much more pleasant. While it’s true that rain is common, that’s why we have such lush green scenery. All you need is a good waterproof coat and you’re all set to explore. Our summers are mild, with average temperatures ranging between 10°C and 20°C. Winters are chilly, sometimes snowy, but not as harsh as Canada or northern Europe. The ever-changing skies mean you might experience sunshine, rain, wind and snow all in one afternoon! Packing layers is key to staying comfortable.

Rainbow over Eilean Donan Castle

Do I need a visa to visit Scotland?

Scotland is part of the UK, and you can easily check what travel documents you may need by entering your details here on the UK Government website. For Australians, visiting Scotland and the UK is usually very straightforward, but you will need to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Can I drive with my Australian licence?

Driving in Scotland is relatively easy for Australians, as we also drive on the left. Car hire is available from the airport on arrival, and you can use your Australian driver’s licence for up to 12 months. If you stay here for longer than that, you’ll need to get a UK licence (find out more). Roads in Scotland can be narrow and single-track, especially in the Highlands, so being comfortable with country driving is helpful.

Driving over the Kylesku Bridge in the Scottish Highlands

Is public transport easy to navigate?

Scotland is well connected, with trains and buses linking major cities and rural areas. The rail network makes travel to England and Wales easy too. You can use Traveline Scotland to plan your trip.

Will I understand Scottish words and accents?

While we share a common language, there are, of course, notable differences in our vocabularies and accents. Scottish English uses plenty of unique words and phrases, our accents can be strong in some regions, and we may speak more quickly than you’re used to. But generally, Australians and Scots communicate perfectly well with each other. Scottish people are known for being incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we love a good blether (chat)!

Fort Augustus village, by Loch Ness

What’s the cost of living like in Scotland?

Compared to Australia, the cost of living in Scotland is generally lower. This is a really useful website where you can compare approximate prices in two different world cities, with everything from the cost of a beer to a trip to the cinema.

How can I access healthcare during my visit?

Healthcare in Scotland is excellent, and as an Australian visitor, you are entitled to free emergency treatment. However, you may have to pay for other services. Therefore, you should have travel insurance in place. You can find out more here. Chemists (pharmacies) are widely available in towns and villages, and you can also access GP services if needed.

Stay in a magnificent 19th-century abbey with Abbey Holidays Loch Ness

Where should I visit in Scotland?

There are so many beautiful parts of Scotland to explore. You could start in Edinburgh, the capital city, with its amazing architecture and rich history. Then discover Glasgow’s vibrant arts scene and lively pubs. Don’t miss a visit to the Scottish Highlands, for rugged landscapes, whisky tours and outdoor adventures. Stay with us for a while at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness and enjoy unique accommodation in a historic former abbey on the shores of Loch Ness. Then head on up to the Isle of Skye for stunning coastal views and a fairytale castle, or visit the Orkney Islands and their ancient archaeological sites. VisitScotland will help you to plan your adventures.

Scotland holidays clothing essentials

The weather in the Scottish Highlands is epic! Here you will often hear us say “There’s no such thing as bad weather! Just bad clothing!” It is very common for you to experience all 4 seasons in one day here, so layering is key! And here are some must-haves:

Waterproof Jacket or Kagool: Something light that will protect you from the wind and rain showers. Or if holidaying in winter, be sure to bring a long heavy coat, gloves and hat. In fact, we’d pack a light pair of gloves and a woolly hat for early spring and autumn too.

Comfortable Shoes: Whether you’re exploring the Abbey grounds or hiking nearby trails, sturdy footwear is a must. Trainers and walking boots are both ideal.

Warm Layers: Even in summer, evenings can be chilly. Pack sweaters or fleece layers. Layering up multiple tops is the best way to manage the Scottish climate year-round. So if you get hot, or cold, you can adjust your clothing to suit.

Good decent sweatshirts or hoodies: to keep you warm! This is recommended also for summer evenings.

Hat and Gloves: For colder months, these are non-negotiable. In summer these will not be needed.

Scarf or snood: Recommended out of Summer to keep you snug and to allow you to enjoy more outdoors.

Casual Outfits: Jeans joggies, leggings… For exploring and relaxing at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness. Pack a good array of comfortable, casual wear.

Nice outfit: for going out for dinner. We have lots of lovely local restaurants for you to enjoy!

Food and Snacks

All of our luxury Scottish cottages and apartments are fully self-catering. We have fantastic, spacious kitchens, which are equipped with all you could need for your holidays. We have local shops in Fort Augustus, but we do advise to:

Grocery shopping: If you are staying with us for a week (for our greatest discounts) complete your large grocery shopping at the nearest town (Inverness or Fort William). Alternatively, you can arrange for Tesco or Asda to deliver to your door, but please note you must be in to receive your shopping. For short stays and top-ups, we have a local Spar shop and Morrisons mini market.

Non-Perishable Snacks: Recommended for outdoor enthusiast holidays, trails and hikes.

Reusable Containers: Perfect for packing lunches.

Local Produce Bag: For any farmer’s market finds.

Insect Repellent: Useful during warmer months to combat the Midges. They only tend to come out early at sunrise and in the evenings, and don’t like windy places, so stay in a breeze to avoid them. But wearing a repellant such Smidge or famous with the scots Avon’s Skin so soft oil will keep them away. During the day they won’t bother you, so you can explore the wonders of Loch Ness in comfort…

Money: when planning your trip, we use the same currency in Scotland as in England, the British Pound. Scotland and England both print their own notes, although both are of exactly the same value and of the same use in either country. Please note, however, that whilst all Scottish shops will happily accept English notes, many in the south of England will not accept Scottish notes. These can be exchanged in any bank if required. Or you can simplify your travels and pay by card instead.

Here in Scotland, we share the same currency as the rest of the UK. We use pounds (£) and pennies (p) just like in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. One pound in Scotland is worth exactly the same as one pound in those countries. The only difference is the shape and design of our banknotes. You can use English money in Scotland without any problems, and you don’t have to change it before you join us. Scottish money is produced by Scottish banks, and as such it can look very different to English notes, which are produced by English banks.

But it’s not as straightforward as it might seem! So before you join us at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness for a luxurious stay in the stunning Highland town of Fort Augustus, here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about using Scottish money!

Where can I use Scottish money?

Scottish money is legal currency and is welcomed in shops and businesses throughout Scotland. If you are coming up from England, you might be surprised to see different looking banknotes being handed to you. Don’t worry! Our money looks different but it’s still worth the same. You can check the different banknote designs in circulation here. So whether you are keen to do some gift shopping in Fort Augustus or enjoy a nice pint by the canal, your money will be accepted.

The only exception may be with a £50 bank note. Some shops may not accept these simply because they are worried they are forgeries. If you do have any ‘fifties’, you might find life a little easier if you ask a bank to swap it for lower denomination notes before heading to the shops.

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, banknotes have started to use the face of King Charles III instead. Don’t worry, cash with the queen’s head on them are still accepted everywhere.

Can I use Scottish money in England?

Yes! Scottish money can also be used in the rest of the UK, but again some shops may choose to not accept them. This is within their right as they may be worried they are forgeries. Scottish notes are rare in England (especially the further south you go) and shopkeepers may not be familiar with them. Unfortunately the only solution if this happens to you is to pay using a different (English) note, or by card.

Throughout the UK, shops are perfectly within their rights to decline cash as payment. In fact, some shops are turning away from cash to be ‘card only’, but this isn’t something to worry about here in the Highlands.

Are there Scottish coins?

We don’t have any specific Scottish coins, so any you have can be found and used throughout the UK. Our coin denominations are:

1p (a penny)

2p

5p

10p

20p

50p

£1

£2

Fun fact: if you’re looking for a cool trick to show your friends back home, then keep an eye out for coins with a Royal Shield of Arms design on the back. Each coin from a penny to a fifty pence piece has a different image on the back, and when put together like a jigsaw they create a larger picture of a shield, like this:

Where can I get Scottish money?

You can find Scottish money in banks throughout Scotland. The Scottish banks who print their own money are called:

Bank of Scotland

Royal Bank of Scotland

Clydesdale Bank

If you pop into a branch or use their cash machines (ATMs) you should get Scottish money.

It’s hard to get Scottish money outside of Scotland, so if you want to get your hands on some then the best way is to come for a holiday! Book your well-deserved break at Abbey Holidays to enjoy a luxury apartment in the glorious Scottish Highlands.

Can I use credit cards / debit cards in Scotland?

Yes of course! Cards are accepted in shops and marketplaces all across Scotland. Even smaller businesses and coffee stalls tend to accept cards too. You can pay with a contactless card or chip & pin.

Enjoy all of Scotland’s wonder at Abbey Holidays

Come and stay in a luxury apartment here at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness in Fort Augustus and you’ll soon become an expert in Scottish money!
Looking to visit Scotland on a Highland holiday and coming to Loch Ness? Well, today we are going to explore some cool Loch Ness facts you may not already know about! As you will be aware, visitors flock to Loch Ness every year in the hope of seeing the our most famous resident – Nessie! But Loch Ness has many other claims to fame too! Read on to discover some of the most amazing Loch Ness facts.

This Scottish loch’s waters are deep

The most notable bit of trivia is Loch Ness’ volume of water. Did you know that Loch Ness is only second behind Loch Morar asthe deepest body of fresh water in the UK! And again it is only in second postion only behind the spectacular (also very famous) Loch Lomond for the greatest surface area of fresh water. So, combine these together and Loch Ness thrashes the competition when it comes to which holds the most volume of water!

Loch Ness holds an estimated 263 billion cubic feet of fresh Scottish water, which is more than all the water in all the lakes, rivers and reservoirs in the whole of England and Wales combined! And our famous Highland loch’s deepest points are over 800ft deep! And, this is twice the average depth of the North Sea! So there are plenty of places for our Loch Ness Monster to be lurking… In fact, this Highlands water volume is sufficient enough for every single person on earth to fit inside it 10 times over!

Loch Ness in history

Loch Ness carries massive historical importance. Not only was it of home of the Jacobites and base for many of their uprisings against the English. Our base for Abbey Holidays Loch Ness is situated within the magnicifent Abbey of Fort Augustus. And not many know, but this building initially originated from the name of the village in which it inhabits… Fort Augustus. Yes, this land was named Fort Augustus after the original fort built here. Built as part of 3 fortifiaction to protect against a futher Scots uprising, after the battle of Culloden. Fort Augustus, Fort George in Nairn and Fort William. Fort William is now a town, with only a small part of the original wall surviving. And Forth Augustus, which was converted into the spectacular abbey building, which survives today. Fort George is the only fort still fully intact.

Too deep to freeze!

Join us for a magical winter holiday in Scotland on the banks of Loch Ness. You are sure not to freeze! Abbey Holidays Loch Ness as you might expect will keep you toasty warm, snuggled up in the historic abbey overlooking the banks of Loch Ness. The scenery and wildlife in the Highlands are spectacular in winter. But wrap up warm as you venture out as it can get very chilly outside. In winter we normally only get to the low celcius, but very occasionally in the Highlands we can reach temperatures approaching -10°C to 20°C. And whilst nearly all the lochs in the Highlands freeze over, some so much so that traditional cattle drovers used to walk their cattle across the frozen lochs, for some strange scientific reason Loch Ness has never frozen over! It’s simply too deep to freeze.

Wild swimming on Loch Ness

And yes, our loch is very popular with wild swimmer… But due to its lack of being able to freeze, our Scottish Wild Swimming lovers will not have to break the ice before popping in for a refreshing swim!

This is due to a process called the thermocline effect. Here the cold water that would otherwise freeze in a shallower loch sinks lower in the loch and is replaced by warmer water from below. There is a sufficient volume of water for this to happen continuously such that the surface will never freeze right across.

But if it’s the wild swimming in Scotland you are here for, you will be spoilt for choice! We are absolutely surrounded by lochs here! From Loch Ness, to the famous Loch Tarff, Plodda Falls, the trail of the seven lochs and so so many more!

The Great Glen was formed by Loch Ness

The Great Glen (with its epic walking trail, The Great Glen Way) is part of a major line of weakness in the earth’s crust. The land to the north of the Great Glen at one time was around 100km to the northeast of where it currently is. About 400 million years ago it sled southwest about 100km along the Great Glen fault to where it is now and created a long linear loch in-between the two land masses in the process.

Loch Ness is a tectonic lake formed by the land converging around this Great Glen fault. Many people don’t realise that this fault line actually continues southwest through Ireland and beyond.

Take a short-cut via the Caledonian Canal

Another amazing fact… Abbey Holidays Loch Ness sits on the banks of not only Loch Ness, but also on the edge of the Caledonian Canal. And it is possible for you to take a boat right through Scotland along the Caledonian Canal, and on to Loch Ness. Boat ride Loch Ness via the Caledonian Canals 100km wetted corridor from coast to coast including 29 locks on the canal sections. The vast majority of the passage from coast to coast is down the length of Loch Ness. It’s a very handy shortcut and saves sailing all around the north coast of Scotland.

The Loch Ness area is rich in biodiversity and home to a wide variety of wildlife. Here are just a few animals for you to look out for during your stay with us at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness. So bring your camera and your binoculars and start exploring…

Red deer

The most common species of deer to be spotted near Loch Ness is the red deer. It is the largest land mammal in Scotland and is native to our country. The majestic animals thrive in our rugged landscapes, grazing on grasses, heather and plants. The male stags are easily recognised by their impressive antlers, which they shed and regrow annually. They are timid and have a keen sense of hearing, so keep quiet and be patient for the best chance of seeing them.

Golden eagle

The golden eagle is widely regarded as the national bird of Scotland. This amazing bird of prey soars above the lochs, moorlands and mountains. Look up in the trees and high in the sky for a chance to spot one. With a wingspan of up to 2.3 meters, they are much larger than most other birds of prey, such as the more commonly-sighted buzzard. Their feathers are mostly brown, but their head and neck is a golden colour.

Red squirrel

Numbers of our native red squirrels have declined in the UK over the last 150 years, with the introduction of the invasive grey squirrel. However, here in the Scottish Highlands, they are still able to thrive. That’s because our many conifer forests offer a better habitat for the reds than the greys. These charming little creatures have a red-brown coat, tufty ears and a bushy tail. Look out for them in the pine forests around Loch Ness. They are most active in the mornings and late afternoons.

Seal

Although not a common occurrence, seals have been spotted in the River Ness and even in the loch itself on occasion. But for a better chance to see them, the Beauly Firth and Moray Firth near Inverness are known for sightings of both common and grey seals. Autumn is considered the best time to spot them, as they are likely to come closer to the shore.

Based at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness, all this wildlife and more is on your doorstep. So book your stay in one of our cosy apartments or cottages and get ready to discover the Scottish Highlands and all its natural wonders!

Stunning winter walks

Winter around Loch Ness offers some breathtaking walks, with the snowy mountains providing a magical backdrop. Whether you choose a long-distance walk on the Great Glen Way, a gentle hike up to Suidhe Viewpoint or a short stroll by the Caledonian Canal, there’s something for everyone. Explore these Loch Ness walks and choose your adventure!

Fort Augustus is beautiful in winter

Wildlife spotting

Winter is a good time to spot wildlife around Loch Ness and the Scottish Highlands. Take a nature walk in the surrounding forests and look out for deer, red squirrels and a variety of birds including birds of prey such as golden eagles and osprey. Not so wild, but there are also lots of friendly Highland cows in the area. And of course, keep your eyes peeled for our friend Nessie, otherwise known as the Loch Ness Monster.

Red squirrels can be found throughout the Scottish Highlands

Peaceful winter cruises

Speaking of Nessie, why not try looking for her on a monster-hunting cruise? Cruise Loch Ness in Fort Augustus runs daily tours all year round. Although, always check on the day as they are dependent on the weather conditions. Their top-of-the-range Sonar equipment beams live images from the depths of the loch, so you’ll get a good look at what’ lies beneath the waters’ down there. A cruise is also a great way to see the area and learn a bit of history from the guides on board.

The dark skies

Winter brings longer nights and darker skies. Away from the light pollution of the cities, you can gaze up to witness thousands of stars on a clear night. Stargazing is a fantastic winter activity, and there’s sometimes a chance to see the Northern Lights too! The best time of year to experience this spectacular natural light show is between October and March, and the best time of night is generally between 10 pm and 2 am.

Winter is the best time of year to see the Nothern Lights

Warming whisky tasting

Most Highland whisky distilleries are open over the winter. The perfect way to warm up on a cold winter’s day! Take a tour of the distillery, find out how whisky is made and sample a dram or two for yourself. There are several distilleries within about an hour’s drive of Fort Augustus, such as Ben Nevis Distillery, Uile-bheist and The Singleton.

There’s nothing like a dram of whisky to keep you warm and toasty
