The great walking and cycling route

The Great Glen Way is a long-distance walking and cycling trail in Scotland that stretches for about 75 miles. It runs from the town of Fort William in the southwest to Inverness in the northeast, following the natural geological fault line known as the Great Glen. The route passes through Fort Augustus, where our holiday accommodation is based. Therefore, all our guests have easy access to this fantastic walkway.

Walking or cycling the Great Glen Way

The entire 75-mile route takes around 6 days to complete. However, it is split into shorter sections, so you can do as much or as little as you like. For guests staying with us at Abbey Holidays Loch Ness, you could choose to tackle the third section between Laggan Locks and Fort Augustus, which takes around 4 or 5 hours to walk. Or you could take the fourth section from Fort Augustus to Invermoriston, which can take up to 4 hours. The route is way-marked so you can take your time, go at your own pace and walk or cycle for as long as you can manage. Explore the route.

A site of geological importance

The Great Glen itself lies along a natural fault line called the Great Glen Fault. It formed many millions of years ago through the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates. As landmasses were pushed together, a divide was created across what is now the Scottish Highlands. The area offers huge insights into a range of geological processes and phenomena and it is studied by scientists from around the world.
