A south Loch Ness walking trail

The Trail of the Seven Lochs is a circular walking route, spanning 50 miles, across seven different lochs in the Scottish Highlands. These lochs are: Loch Ness, Loch Ashie, Loch Duntelchaig, Loch Ruthven, Loch a’ Choire, Loch Ceo Glais and Loch Mhor. This is a spectacular route, taking in beautiful lochside scenery. It takes around three days to walk the whole trail, and it is also a popular route with horse riders.

Navigating the route

You can start the walk at any point on the circuit, however most walkers start in Inverness or Inverfarigaig. View the South Loch Ness Access Group site for a map and description of the route. The trail is marked with “T7L” signs, which you can follow, but take walking directions and a map and compass with you too. Don’t rely on your phone for directions, as the signal can be poor in certain areas. The route is suitable for walkers and horse riders. Some sections are also suitable for mountain bikers, but others are not, so please take care.

The seven lochs

The seven lochs on the route are: Loch Ness, Loch Ashie, Loch Duntelchaig, Loch Ruthven, Loch a’ Choire, Loch Ceo Glais and Loch Mhor. Loch is the Scottish word for lake, and the seven on our route vary in size and shape, but each one has its own unique beauty. The lochs are all close together, on the south side of Loch Ness, and the path weaves its way around them.
