Explore Scottish history in Fort Augustus
Of course, one of the most well-known historic sites in Fort Augustus is our very own abbey. Originally a British military fort, it was gifted to Benedictine monks in 1867. They expanded it into a grand abbey with impressive Gothic-style architecture. After closing in the late 1990s, the Grade A-listed building was renovated and reopened in 2012 as The Highland Club, now featuring luxury holiday apartments and cottages. So, you can now stay right here in one of our holiday lets, surrounded by history!
Nearby, you’ll find several fascinating historic sites, each offering a glimpse into Scotland’s rich and storied past. One of the most remarkable is the Caledonian Canal, which cuts through Fort Augustus and features an impressive series of locks. Designed by the renowned Scottish engineer Thomas Telford, the canal was an ambitious project aimed at providing a navigable route across the country. Today, these locks remain fully operational, allowing boats to traverse the waterway. In the heart of Fort Augustus, the Clansman Centre provides a unique opportunity to step back in time. Here, costumed guides bring 17th-century Scotland to life, demonstrating traditional weaponry, clothing and daily life from the era of the Highland clans. Just a short distance away, the remains of Urquhart Castle stand proudly on the shores of Loch Ness. Dating back to at least the 13th century, this once-mighty stronghold played a significant role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and later, the Jacobite Risings. Today, its ruins offer breathtaking views and a connection to Scotland’s turbulent past.
