Loch Ness & the Caledonian Canal

Many fish, birds and mammals live on these iconic waterways in the Scottish Highlands. Birds like mallards, moorhens and swans are common on the canal. In summer, look for ospreys fishing near the loch. Small birds like wagtails and sandpipers may dart along the water’s edge too. Kingfishers are rare, but sometimes spotted in quieter moments. Occasionally, deer come down to drink at the canal or lochside. At dawn or dusk, you might even see an otter!

RSPB Nature Reserves

To view a wide range of birdlife in beautiful habitats, visit one of the many RSPB nature reserves in the Scottish Highlands. Corrimony and Loch Ruthven are both around 45 minutes drive from Fort Augustus, in different directions. Corrimony is a great place to spot black grouse, especially during the spring lekking season, while Loch Ruthven is one of the best places in the UK to see the rare Slavonian grebe. Both reserves are free to visit and have lovely nature trails, which you can follow and explore.

Glen Affric

This spectacular glen is about an hour’s drive from Fort Augustus, and it’s well worth the trip. Its forest paths are great for walking, cycling and exploring nature. The ancient pinewoods are home to red squirrels and pine martens. You’ll likely see red deer wandering about, especially early in the morning or late in the day. In autumn, you might hear stags roaring during the rutting season. Look up to search for golden eagles or buzzards soaring over the hills.
