History of the lighthouse
Built in 1840, the Pepperpot Lighthouse is so-named because it resembles an old-fashioned pepper pot. The Fort Augustus lighthouse stands at just 6 m tall, and although no longer operational, it once featured a flashing green light. Although small in size, it served an important function, as it helped guide vessels safely along the Caledonian Canal. This vital waterway connects Scotland’s east and west coasts, and lighthouses were particularly important in poor weather or low visibility. Modern navigation systems have now replaced the need for small lighthouses like this, but the Pepperpot Lighthouse remains a much-loved feature of the local landscape.
