Fort Augustus Abbey history
Originally, Fort Augustus was a military fort, built by the British in the wake of the 18th-century Jacobite rebellions. After it fell into disuse, the fort was acquired by the Frasers of Lovats, who gifted the land to an order of Benedictine monks as the site for a new monastery in 1867. Over the years, the monks absorbed the old structure into a large abbey with a church, school and spacious grounds, with impressive Gothic-style architectural features.
