Built on the site of a fort
A military fort stood on this site from 1729, during the turbulent period of the Jacobite Risings. Constructed as part of the British government’s efforts to suppress the Jacobite rebellion and maintain control over the Highlands, the fort played a strategic role. However, as the threat of rebellion faded over time, the fort fell into disuse. Eventually, the land was acquired by the influential Frasers of Lovat, a powerful Scottish clan. Then in 1876, Simon Fraser, 13th Lord Lovat, passed the land to an order of Benedictine monks as the site for a new monastery.
